A warrior was trained to control his actions by pouring water from one hand to the other in this book. Help!?

I am trying to figure out which book this is. I read it in Grade School and think about it from time to time. the title of the book is only one or two words and it is the main characters title once he has finished his training. Another part of the story is that when he was young his mother made him kill a chicken. After his training his mentor was caught and executed but pantomimed pouring water from one hand to the other so that his charge would control himself. The Mentor may have been blind, I am not sure because it has been several years.
